Cool Teacher: During the bomb attack in Moon Rising, he runs into the burning classroom to save injured students.A lot of his narrative in the first book consists of him remarking on how he's not fit for his "Big Heroic Destiny". Classical Anti-Hero: Thought of by himself and his guardians as a useless dragonet of destiny due to not being very vicious, determined or intelligent.Chick Magnet: Moon's thoughts in Moon Rising shows that a lot of the dragonets at Jade Mountain Academy have crushes on him in a typical teenage girl fashion, with one of them thinking about his "heroic limp".Chaste Hero: He doesn't have any interest in or exactly understand romantic relationships, though it is implied he likes Peril back.Book Dumb: Clay has a terrible memory and often doesn't remember things that he learned from lessons or from scrolls.The Big Guy: Clay is the biggest of the Dragonets.He eats multiple cows while most dragons eat less and Sunny only eats about a lizard a week. Big Eater: Clay is constantly hungry and thinking about food.Big Damn Heroes: Appears just in time to save Glory and Kinkajou from the NightWings in The Hidden Kingdom.Big Brother Instinct: It turns out the whole reason he tried to smash the others' eggs after hatching was this, since the first duty of a bigwings is to help his siblings out of their shells. Tui notes that this makes him a perfect choice for the POV of the first book in the series. Audience Surrogate: He has a poor memory for scrolls and details, meaning that he's always hearing information about the Wings of Fire world for the first time that he remembers clearly.Dragons like Sunny wonder how someone like Peril could ever deserve Clay. Angel/Devil Shipping: In-Universe with Peril.All-Loving Hero: He is sympathetic and protective to all dragons.Actual Pacifist: Clay hates fighting and wants to resolve the war peacefully.The oldest of the Dragonets and their resident strong-man/moral center. "Maybe we're supposed to end this war peacefully, without all this killing." As opposed to their replacement dragonets, who always fight and don't care if they get injured. Vitriolic Best Buds: They may fight from time to time (okay, all the time), but they always have each other's backs.The Team: Tsunami is The Leader, Glory is The Lancer, Clay is The Big Guy, Starflight is The Smart Guy, and Sunny is The Chick.Rebellious Rebel: They rebel against both the Talons of Peace and the warring tribes.There are a few speed bumps, especially since the student body involves more than one member of royalty, but eventually the Academy becomes a success that inspires future generations (and according to Darkness of Dragons, there's a waiting list to enroll). Reasonable Authority Figure: In the second series, they found the Jade Mountain Academy, a school dedicated to teaching dragons of all races and classes to work together.Kid Hero: They're all six years old, which is teenaged for a dragon.Hope Bringer: Many dragons across the world are given hope by the prophecy.Fire-Forged Friends: They grew up with no-one else around but their abusive "caretakers", so they basically had to be good to each other.
