Adhering to the required CPL means there won’t be any overspills, cropping or unintended line breaks in the subtitles you worked so hard on. It’s more important for later stages of video production, like if subtitles need to be hardcoded (burned-in) to the video file. However, it’s much more common to be limited to 40 characters per line, sometimes lower.Īgain, this should always be based on what your client requests. The absolute maximum CPL I’ve ever been allowed was 42. In my experience, it’s a matter of client preference. It can be okay to have a higher CPS at times, but only when it can’t be avoided. ⚠️ Of the two, though, this one has the most flexibility. (□ Look up the Netflix style guide for your language… You’re welcome!) Keep in mind that this changes based on several factors, like style guides, country norms, type of video, etc. Remember how annoying it is?Ī general rule for English subtitling is that your CPS shouldn’t be any higher than 20. We’ve all fallen victim to the subtitle that was gone too soon. People need time to actually read the subtitles on the screen, otherwise they can get frustrated. It’s how we measure reading speed for viewers. ![]()
